Our four-hour short course is a vital, mandatory safety module designed to give newcomers to the maritime industry a comprehensive foundational framework. Entering a career at sea requires adapting to a unique operating environment; this course provides the essential knowledge and understanding needed to navigate your roles and responsibilities smoothly and safely from day one.

Through interactive lectures, real-world case studies, and structured group discussions, students will gain insight into the daily realities of shipboard life, focusing heavily on safety-first workplace habits, resource management, and team cohesion.

Latest Regulatory Update – MIN 729 Compliant: In accordance with the latest maritime safety standards, this course incorporates the vital curriculum updates mandated by MIN 729, giving full effect to IMO Resolution MSC.560(108). This training now integrates advanced safety protocols, revised onboard communications, and modern standards regarding crew social responsibilities and safety cultures at sea.

Core Learning Objectives

By completing this module, you will develop a thorough understanding of:

  • Onboard Safety Culture: Understanding and observing safe working practices, accident prevention, and identifying shipboard hazards.
  • Emergency Procedures: Knowing your role in emergency response, understanding muster lists, and recognising internal communications and alarm signals.
  • Health & Wellbeing: Maintaining proper human relations, managing industrial fatigue, and understanding safety practices that protect physical and mental health at sea.
  • Environmental Considerations: Adhering to strict marine environmental protection regulations, preventing pollution, and understanding MARPOL guidelines.
  • Life on Board: Coping effectively with living and working closely within a multi-cultural shipboard environment, establishing effective communication, and respecting lines of command.

Who is This Course For?

This course forms part of the mandatory STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) framework and is included as part of our Basic Safety Training package. It is required for:

  • All new entrants to the commercial maritime industry.
  • Prospective superyacht crew, cruise ship staff, and offshore sector workers.
  • Seafarers looking to validate their safety certifications with current IMO/MCA resolutions.

Location
This course is conducted at our main Academy address: Unit 6 Hardley Industrial Estate, Hardley, Southampton SO45 3NQ
Course Times
The start time will be detailed in your booking confirmation, buts generally course times are 08:30 - 13:00. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to start for registration and introductory briefings.
Days & Duration
This module is delivered over half a day (4 hours), either as a standalone course or as part of the 5-day STCW Basic Safety Training package.

  • Valid government-issued photographic ID (Passport or Driving Licence)
  • Comfortable classroom attire
  • Upload your health questionnaire on our online portal after booking
Refreshments
Complimentary hot and cold drink refreshments are provided on site throughout the course days. Lunch is not provided - options are available locally, or attendees are welcome to bring a packed lunch.
Payment Terms
  • Pay in Full: Secure your spot today with a single 100% upfront payment
  • Flexi-Pay Deposit: Pay a 35% non-refundable deposit now to reserve your place. The remaining balance is due 14 days prior to the course start date.
Cancellation Policy
  • Cancellation 14+ Days Before Start Date: You will receive a full refund minus the 35% non-refundable deposit. If you originally paid the 35% deposit option, no further payments will be due.
  • Cancellation Within 14 Days of Start Date: 100% cancellation fee. Course fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not available as an add-on option. A list of recommended local hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses near our training facility is provided as part of the joining information.
Travel & Parking
Free on-site parking is available at our main training facility. Full directions and travel guidance will be provided in your booking confirmation email.
This course fulfills the mandatory minimum requirements for familiarisation and basic safety training set out in Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code.
