Our STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) course is a mandatory maritime safety qualification for anyone starting a career at sea. This internationally recognised program covers all essential STCW safety modules, combining expert instruction with hands-on practical training to prepare you for real-world emergency situations onboard.
Course Modules Included
Learn essential maritime survival skills through theoretical sessions and pool-based practical exercises. Students will use life rafts, immersion suits, and life jackets to master real-life rescue and abandonment procedures.
Develop the skills needed to prevent and respond to onboard fires. Training includes practical use of breathing apparatus, firefighting equipment, and casualty rescue scenarios delivered in realistic maritime fire simulations.
Understand safe working practices on board a vessel, including pollution prevention duties, emergency response protocols, and insights into the culture and life aboard commercial ships.
Gain essential first aid knowledge for marine environments, receiving practical and theoretical training in first aid techniques for common onboard injuries.
Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) – INCLUDED FREE
The STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) module is included at no extra cost when booking the full BST package. Learn how to recognise security threats and follow ISPS Code requirements.
Designed for safe and confident powerboat handling, this section provides practical training in:
- ✓ Launch and recovery procedures
- ✓ Close-quarters manoeuvring and driving at planing speed
- ✓ Man overboard recovery procedures
- ✓ Anchoring and securing to a buoy
- ✓ International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (ColRegs)
What Is Included

Validity of Certification: The RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate does not have a formal expiry date for recreational use. However, this qualification carries a 5-year expiry if commercially endorsed.
Refresher training is highly recommended to stay updated with evolving safety guidelines and navigation rules.
Please Note: There is a minimum number of students required for the course to run.
Course Details & Logistics
Location
This course starts every day at our main Academy address: Unit 6 Hardley Industrial Estate, Hardley, Southampton SO45 3NQ.
The practical element of the Fire module is carried out at our purpose-built Fire Unit based locally, the PST practical element is run at an external pool facility and the Powerboat Level 2 boat handling is carried out on Southampton Water from Hythe Marina.

Course Times
Standard course hours run from 08:30 to 16:30 on weekdays and from 09:00 on weekends. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to start time (08:15 weekdays / 08:45 weekends) for registration and briefings. Late arrivals may be turned away to meet regulatory compliance hours.
Days & Duration
This combined package is delivered over 7 days.
What to Bring
- Valid government-issued photographic ID (Passport or Driving Licence)
- Fire Fighting Session: Comfortable, casual clothes (like a t-shirt and joggers to wear under the provided PPE and Fire Kit). A spare change of clothes, towel, toiletries, and clean socks are recommended.
- PST Pool Session: Towel, swimwear, long trousers (no jeans), and a long-sleeved top to be worn in the pool, plus a bag for wet clothing
- Powerboat Level 2 Session: Warm layers, waterproof outer jacket and trousers, plus suitable non-slip deck shoes or boots. A passport photo for your certificate
- Upload your health questionnaire on our online portal after booking
Refreshments
Complimentary hot and cold drink refreshments are provided on site throughout the course days. Lunch is not provided - options are available locally, or attendees are welcome to bring a packed lunch.
Payment Terms
- Pay in Full: Secure your spot today with a single 100% upfront payment
- Flexi-Pay Deposit: Pay a 35% non-refundable deposit now to reserve your place. The remaining balance is due 14 days prior to the course start date.
Cancellation Policy
- Cancellation 14+ Days Before Start Date: You will receive a full refund minus the 35% non-refundable deposit. If you originally paid the 35% deposit option, no further payments will be due.
- Cancellation Within 14 Days of Start Date: 100% cancellation fee. Course fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not available as an add-on option. A list of recommended local hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses near our training facility is provided as part of the joining information.
Travel & Parking
Free on-site parking is available at our main training facility. Full directions and travel guidance will be provided in your booking confirmation email.
Completion of this 7-day package ensures full compliance with STCW mandatory standards and includes the RYA Powerboat Level 2, providing you with essential global qualifications and practical boat-handling skills to significantly boost your employability on commercial vessels.
