Our STCW Update Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other Than Fast Rescue Boats) course is designed for seafarers who already hold the full PSC&RB qualification and must maintain STCW competency every 5 years. This refresher course ensures continued compliance with the mandatory standards of proficiency outlined in STCW Code A-VI/2-1.
This intensive 1-day course includes classroom theory and practical training at our waterside facility. Delegates will complete hands-on drills involving the launching, handling, and recovery of lifeboats and inflatable rescue boats.
Unrestricted vs. Restricted Certification: Hold a Restricted Certificate? You can book directly onto this course. Our standard programme is the Unrestricted Update, but we will automatically adapt your training on the day to renew your restricted qualification.
Course Content Includes

Course Entry Requirements
Under the updated STCW Convention and Code, seafarers must complete updated proficiency training every 5 years for all safety-critical qualifications. You must hold one of the following:
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSC&RB) certificate issued by an STCW-compliant administration accepted by the MCA. Check the accepted countries list here.
- UK AB (Able Seafarer Deck – STCW II/4) Certificate
- UK Certificate of Equivalent Competency (CEC)
- UK Certificate of Competency (CoC) (excluding Master of Code Vessels)
Important Eligibility Note: Please double-check the eligibility link above if your previous certificate was completed outside the UK. If your issuing country does not appear on that list, you will need to join us for the Full Course rather than the update.
To avoid disappointment, please confirm your prerequisites before booking, as we cannot offer refunds if we have to decline your attendance later on.
Course Details & Logistics
Location
This course starts and ends at our main Academy address: Unit 6 Hardley Industrial Estate, Hardley, Southampton SO45 3NQ. The practical session is run at our practical facility at Hythe Marine Park.
Course Times
Standard course hours run from 08:30 to 16:30. Please arrive by 08:15 for registration and introductory briefings. Late arrivals may be turned away to ensure regulatory compliance hours are met.

What to Bring
- Valid government-issued photographic ID (Passport or Driving Licence)
- Warm layers, waterproof clothing, and suitable sturdy, non-slip footwear for practical waterside exercises
- Upload your health questionnaire and previous PSC&RB certificate on our online portal after booking
Refreshments
Complimentary hot and cold drink refreshments are provided on site throughout the course day. Lunch is not provided - options are available locally, or attendees are welcome to bring a packed lunch.
Payment Terms
- Pay in Full: Secure your spot today with a single 100% upfront payment
- Flexi-Pay Deposit: Pay a 35% non-refundable deposit now to reserve your place. The remaining balance is due 14 days prior to the course start date.
Cancellation Policy
- Cancellation 14+ Days Before Start Date: You will receive a full refund minus the 35% non-refundable deposit. If you originally paid the 35% deposit option, no further payments will be due.
- Cancellation Within 14 Days of Start Date: 100% cancellation fee. Course fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not available as an add-on option. A list of recommended local hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses near our training facility is provided as part of the joining information.
Travel & Parking
Free on-site parking is available at our training facility. Full directions and travel guidance will be provided in your booking confirmation email.
This updated training provides the essential education, practical skills, and knowledge required to maintain compliance with STCW A-VI/2-1 and provides an internationally recognised certificate upon successful completion.
