The STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) Course is a core element of the STCW Basic Safety Training programme and is mandatory for all new seafarers entering the maritime industry. It provides essential, practical survival training in accordance with the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments and Section A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code.

Important for Refreshing Seafarers: As there is no formal STCW 'Update' route for those who cannot meet the self-declaration criteria, this full 1-day course is the required path to renew your competency and stay compliant with industry best practices.

Who Should Attend?

The full 1-day PST training programme is suitable if:

  • You are a first-time seafarer joining the Merchant Navy, Superyacht, Offshore, or Fishing sectors.
  • Your previous PST certificate has expired and you cannot meet the eligibility criteria for the Self-Declaration Route as outlined in Annex B of MSN 1865.

Course Overview & Learning Outcomes

This training provides the vital knowledge and practical skills needed to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment. During the intensive session, you will learn how to:

  • ✓ Equipment Mastery: Correctly don and use a lifejacket.
  • ✓ Water Entry: Jump safely from a height into the water.
  • ✓ Survival Manoeuvres: Float, swim, and turn in the water while wearing a lifejacket.
  • ✓ Life Raft Procedures: Right an inverted life raft and board survival craft from the water.
  • ✓ Emergency Strategy: Understand distress signals, hypothermia prevention, and rescue strategies.
  • ✓ Team Coordination: Work effectively as part of a team during high-pressure emergencies.

Course Prerequisites

No prior seagoing experience or previous certificates are required to join this course. It is designed specifically for new entrants and those requiring a full skills refresh to maintain their mandatory safety certifications.

Course Details & Logistics

Location
This course starts at our main Academy address: Unit 6 Hardley Industrial Estate, Hardley, Southampton SO45 3NQ before temporarily relocating to our external pool facility for the practical session.
Course Times
Standard course hours run from 08:30 to 16:30. Please arrive by 08:15 for registration and introductory briefings. Late arrivals may be turned away to ensure regulatory compliance hours are met.

This full-day course is delivered over 1 day.
What to Bring
  • Valid government-issued photographic ID (Passport or Driving Licence)
  • The practical element of this session takes place off-site in a pool. Please bring: Towel, swimwear, long trousers (no jeans), and a long-sleeved top to be worn in the pool, plus a bag for wet clothing
  • Upload your health questionnaire and previous Update Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting certificate on our online portal after booking

Transport Note: We can provide transport in our minibus (subject to availability). Please let us know if you would like a seat reserved; seats are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Alternatively, you are welcome to drive, though travel and parking costs cannot be reimbursed.

Refreshments
Complimentary hot and cold drink refreshments are provided on site throughout the course day. Lunch is not provided - options are available locally, or delegates are welcome to bring a packed lunch.

  • Pay in Full: Secure your spot today with a single 100% upfront payment
  • Flexi-Pay Deposit: Pay a 35% non-refundable deposit now to reserve your place. The remaining balance is due 14 days prior to the course start date.
Cancellation Policy
  • Cancellation 14+ Days Before Start Date: You will receive a full refund minus the 35% non-refundable deposit. If you originally paid the 35% deposit option, no further payments will be due.
  • Cancellation Within 14 Days of Start Date: 100% cancellation fee. Course fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not included in the course fee. A list of recommended local hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses near our training facility is provided as part of the joining information.
Travel & Parking
Free on-site parking is available at our training facility. Full directions and travel guidance will be provided in your booking confirmation pack.
All training is delivered in controlled, supervised conditions by experienced maritime safety instructors to ensure your competence and confidence at sea.
