Personal Survival Techniques 1 Day
The STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) Course is a core element of the STCW Basic Safety Training programme and is mandatory for all new seafarers entering the maritime industry. It provides essential, practical survival training in accordance with the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments and Section A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code.
This course is also required for any seafarer who cannot meet the eligibility criteria for the STCW Update Personal Survival Techniques Self Declaration Route and therefore must complete the full, 1-day PST training programme again.
Who Should Attend the Full STCW Personal Survival Techniques Course?
The full PST course is suitable if:
- You are a first-time seafarer, joining the Merchant Navy, superyacht industry, offshore sector, or fishing industry.
- Your previous PST certificate has expired and you cannot self-declare the required onboard competence as outlined in Annex B of MSN 1865.
This ensures you receive complete, foundational maritime survival training before taking on sea duties or joining a vessel.
Course Prerequisites
To attend the full Personal Survival Techniques course, you do not need prior seagoing experience. The course is designed for:
- New entrants to the maritime sector
- Individuals starting careers on superyachts, commercial vessels, cruise ships, tugs, fishing vessels, workboats, or offshore units
- Seafarers whose previous PST certificate is outdated or invalid
- Delegates who cannot meet the self-declaration requirements for the STCW Update PST Self Declaration Route
No previous certificates are required to join the full course.
STCW PST Course Overview
The STCW Personal Survival Techniques Course provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to survive at sea in the event of an emergency or ship abandonment. This training is delivered in accordance with the STCW 2010 Code, ensuring global recognition for work on any STCW-compliant vessel.
During the course, you will learn how to:
- Correctly don and use a lifejacket
- Wear and correctly seal an immersion suit
- Jump safely from height into the water
- Float, swim, and turn in the water while wearing a lifejacket
- Keep afloat without a lifejacket using recognised survival methods
- Right an upturned liferaft
- Board a survival craft from the water wearing a lifejacket
- Understand emergency procedures, distress signals, hypothermia prevention, and survival strategies
- Work effectively as part of a team during emergencies at sea
All training is delivered under controlled, supervised conditions by experienced maritime safety instructors.
