Update Advanced Fire Fighting - Self Declaration Route

Our STCW Update Advanced Fire Fighting course is designed for experienced seafarers who already hold the full STCW Advanced Fire Fighting certificate and are required to renew their competency every 5 years in accordance with the STCW Convention and Code (Section A-VI/3).

This refresher training ensures that officers and crew maintain the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to manage, coordinate, and lead onboard fire-fighting operations. The course focuses on advanced strategy, command and control, incident management, and effective response to complex, high-risk fire scenarios at sea.

The Full-Day Route: This route is required for candidates who cannot provide a valid self-declaration confirming maintained onboard competence through drills and duties within the last 5 years that meet MCA requirements.

Course Entry Requirements

Seafarers must complete updated proficiency training every 5 years for all safety-critical qualifications. You must hold one of the following:

  • Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF) certificate issued by an STCW-compliant administration accepted by the MCA. Check the accepted countries list here.
  • UK AB (Able Seafarer Deck – STCW II/4) Certificate
  • UK Certificate of Equivalent Competency (CEC)
  • UK Certificate of Competency (CoC) (excluding Master of Code Vessels)

Important Eligibility Note: Please double-check the eligibility link above if your previous certificate was completed outside the UK. If your issuing country does not appear on that list, you must enroll in the Full Course rather than the update.

To avoid disappointment, please confirm your prerequisites before booking; we cannot offer refunds if we have to decline attendance due to missing requirements.

This course is run at our main Academy address: Unit 6 Hardley Industrial Estate, Hardley, Southampton SO45 3NQ
Course Times
Standard course hours run from 08:30 to 13:00. Please arrive by 08:15 for registration and introductory briefings. Late arrivals may be turned away to ensure regulatory compliance hours are met.
Days & Duration
This half-day update course is delivered over 4 hours in the morning.

  • Valid government-issued photographic ID (Passport or Driving Licence)
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for a classroom session with some light practical elements
  • Upload your health questionnaire, previous Update Advanced Fire Fighting certificate and self declaration form on our online portal after booking
Refreshments
Complimentary hot and cold drink refreshments are provided on site throughout the course day. Lunch is not provided - options are available locally, or attendees are welcome to bring a packed lunch.

  • Pay in Full: Secure your spot today with a single 100% upfront payment
  • Flexi-Pay Deposit: Pay a 35% non-refundable deposit now to reserve your place. The remaining balance is due 14 days prior to the course start date.
Cancellation Policy
  • Cancellation 14+ Days Before Start Date: You will receive a full refund minus the 35% non-refundable deposit. If you originally paid the 35% deposit option, no further payments will be due.
  • Cancellation Within 14 Days of Start Date: 100% cancellation fee. Course fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not available as an add-on option. A list of recommended local hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses near our training facility is provided with the joining information.
Travel & Parking
Free on-site parking is available at our training facility. Full directions and travel guidance will be provided in your booking confirmation email.
This course ensures full compliance with STCW Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting requirements and provides an internationally recognised certificate upon successful completion.
