Our STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) course is a mandatory training module designed to equip all seafarers with an essential understanding of maritime security protocols. In an evolving global industry, maintaining shipboard security is a collective responsibility shared by every crew member on board.

To go beyond basic theory, students are encouraged to put security protocols into practice through interactive role-play, realistic shipboard simulations, and scenario-based exercises. Combined with expert lectures and structured group discussions, this immersive approach ensures delegates gain the confidence to identify threats and respond effectively in high-pressure situations.

Regulatory Standard: Fully compliant with Section A-VI/6 and Table A-VI/6-1 of the STCW Code, satisfying mandatory ISPS Code security requirements for commercial maritime personnel worldwide.

Core Learning Objectives

This comprehensive module equips each student with a robust knowledge base and practical awareness in key areas, including:

  • ✓ Importance of Shipboard Security: Understanding why maritime security is critical, the core principles of the ISPS Code, Maritime Security Levels (MARSEC), and the key roles and responsibilities involved in vessel defense.
  • ✓ Security Measures & Procedures: Mastering the practical protocols used to maintain vessel security, including access control, searching procedures, restricted area management, and monitoring shipboard operations.
  • ✓ Threat Recognition & Escalation: Identifying potential security risks, suspicious behaviors, stowaway risks, piracy hazards, and weapons, alongside mastering correct emergency reporting channels and chain-of-command protocols.

Who Should Attend?

This course is mandatory for all personnel employed or engaged on sea-going vessels that fall under the ISPS Code who do not hold designated security duties. It is ideal for:

  • New entrants joining commercial shipping, cruise liners, offshore vessels, and superyachts.
  • Interior crew, hotel staff, galley personnel, and general deck or engine hands without specific security assignments.
  • Seafarers looking to complete their full STCW Basic Safety Training qualifications.

Course Details & Logistics

Location
This course starts at our main Academy address: Unit 6 Hardley Industrial Estate, Hardley, Southampton SO45 3NQ.
Course Times
The start time will be detailed in your booking confirmation, buts generally course times are 08:30 - 13:00. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to start for registration and introductory briefings.
Days & Duration
This module is delivered over half a day (4 hours), available as a standalone session or integrated into our 5-day STCW Basic Safety Training package.

  • Valid government-issued photographic ID (Passport or Driving Licence)
  • Comfortable, smart-casual attire for classroom sessions
  • Upload your health questionnaire on our online portal after booking
Refreshments
Complimentary hot and cold drink refreshments are provided on site throughout the course days. Lunch is not provided - options are available locally, or attendees are welcome to bring a packed lunch.
Payment Terms
  • Pay in Full: Secure your spot today with a single 100% upfront payment
  • Flexi-Pay Deposit: Pay a 35% non-refundable deposit now to reserve your place. The remaining balance is due 14 days prior to the course start date.
Cancellation Policy
  • Cancellation 14+ Days Before Start Date: You will receive a full refund minus the 35% non-refundable deposit. If you originally paid the 35% deposit option, no further payments will be due.
  • Cancellation Within 14 Days of Start Date: 100% cancellation fee. Course fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not available as an add-on option. A list of recommended local hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses near our training facility is provided as part of the joining information.
Travel & Parking
Free on-site parking is available at our main training facility. Full directions and travel guidance will be provided in your booking confirmation email.
This course provides an internationally recognised certificate required for work across all commercial maritime vessels under the ISPS Code.
